I remember being in a bookstore when my wife called me over. She had found a book about dog breeds. Handy charts rated dog breeds on a number of scales. We looked up “American Fox Hound”. My dog Kirby was a stray, probably a mutt, found in a Texas cemetery, near death. A vet told me he looked most like an American Fox Hound. More or less. (more…)

Her name elicited fear. Dread. Angst. Trembling. Sixth graders in the elementary schools that fed into Jackson Junior High knew the name. We had heard the stories, coming from the mouths of older siblings, from friends in the church youth group, from the older kids at the neighborhood pool that summer, passed down through the communication networks of Mid-Ohio Valley pre-pubescents. Fear had a name. That name was Wilma Acree. (more…)

I value humor. And I assume most people do. Sometimes I value my own humor more than those around me. (My longsuffering wife can attest to this.)
My good friend Shane exemplifies this best. We used to work together, and he would constantly drop quips in meetings, and then laugh himself to tears. We’d all laugh, too, but none quite as hard as Shane at himself. He was quick to clarify that no one should feel obligated to laugh (thanks), that he only sought to amuse himself. His humor was for his own benefit. Truth of the matter, Shane’s hilarious, but the fact that he cracked himself up so much made all the rest of us laugh even harder.
So it is with great joy that I report, just one week after the triumphal video of my son walking, he has now acquired that second critical lifeskill: The ability to crack himself up.

My boy turns one today! He’s a constant joy and delight to his parents. I’ve been putting together a looping video that we’ll play in the background at his party, but there’s a segment of it that I thought would be fun to share with the world today. So both of you who follow my blog, please enjoy…

Ah, yes. It’s that time of year. Okay, so I said this wouldn’t be a family blog. But I just can’t help myself. We’ve had the best day today, but at noon, in this heat, we though it would be fun to go pick blueberries. And though we got hot in the oppressive heat, we’ll be having fresh blueberry pancakes tomorrow morning! I love Father’s Day.

Wow. This made me laugh. My little daughter. So shy. So timid. So afraid of attention.

I’ve returned! I’m back from a vacation to Alabama. Chevy Chase’s station wagon was upgraded to a minivan as we blared “Holiday Road” over the Sienna sound system. Me, the wife, the two kids… all we needed was a dog on the bumper and a grandparent on the roof. (more…)
