New HDR Train Photos

// August 18th, 2011 // 2 Comments » // HDR, Photography

So it seem a lot of people really like trains. How do I know this? One of the most common search terms people use to find my blog is “train photos” or “HDR trains”. So here you go, Demand. I’d like to introduce you to Supply. (more…)

Friday Inspiration for December 31, 2010 – The Chapel

// January 1st, 2011 // 1 Comment » // DSLR, HDR, Timelapse, Video

I’m getting this Friday inspiration in just under the wire… and not just getting it in by Friday, but by the end of the year!

THE CHAPEL is a remarkable short film I discovered today. It has things I love: Church architecture, time-lapse photography, excellent film making, and HDR video (!). This guy’s whole portfolio is amazing. More and more tools are being developed for film makers, especially in terms of tools that allow someone to move a camera smoothly. A number of these tools, as you can see in the video below, also allow a camera to move very very slowly, which makes for some really amazing time-lapse movies. As a side note, I’ll add that I love great typography, and you can tell just by looking at the thumbnails of the videos at lookycreative.com that type choices are important to this film maker. Watch the video below, with a bonus video after that…

Union Station HDR Pictures

// November 14th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // HDR, Photography

Yesterday we went down to Union Station, hoping to catch Big Bird himself giving a tour of the constellations at the Planetarium. Sadly, it was sold out. But fortunately, a place like Union Station has lots to see and do even if you don’t get into your show. The highlight for our family was the KC Railway Experience, an incredible model train display that we could have stayed at for hours.

I snagged a couple of HDR shots of he interior of Union Station. It really is an amazing building, and it’s great to see it getting so much use, with a live theater, IMAX movie, Science Center, Planetarium, shops, model trains, and beautiful architecture.

Beautiful Union Station

Malawi Children at the Orphanage

Lilongwe

One doesn’t have to travel very far outside of the capital before the roads run out. Lilongwe probably looks like many medium sized African cities, with hand-painted store signs, walled-off properties, grocery stores, billboards, and many more people milling about on the streets than we usually see in the U.S. But drive to the outskirts of town, and concrete and asphalt give way to reddish dirt roads, the tires of cars and bikes kicking up great clouds when it’s the dry season, and creating muddy ruts, I imagine, during the rainy season. All things near the roads, including plants, buildings, and people, get a coat of red. (more…)

Back from Virginia, with HDR photos to prove it!

// July 12th, 2010 // 6 Comments » // HDR, Photography

I’ve returned from a long vacation to Northern Virginia. I’ve spent the past week at my sister’s river house on a creek that runs in to the Potomac. Her house is within 10 miles of the birthplaces of George Washington, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee (pictured at left). So between fishing, kayaking, playing Dominoes, and sleeping in the hammock, I did some photography, too.  (more…)

HDR Train Photos

// June 21st, 2010 // 2 Comments » // HDR, Photography

For Father’s Day, my wife and I took the kids to Baldwin City for a train ride. Of course I got lots of snapshots of the kids “enjoying” their first train ride (sorry, little buddy, I know that whistle’s loud), but before and after the ride I was able to walk around and get some HDR shots. (more…)

Back from Vacation, with HDR pics!

// June 7th, 2010 // 6 Comments » // Family, HDR, Personal, Photography

I’ve returned! I’m back from a vacation to Alabama. Chevy Chase’s station wagon was upgraded to a minivan as we blared “Holiday Road” over the Sienna sound system. Me, the wife, the two kids… all we needed was a dog on the bumper and a grandparent on the roof. (more…)
